Fixing the SQL Server download error "Oops – a required file could not…" by adding registry keys
I was downloading SQL Server 2019 Developer Edition (a free version of SQL Server), when I encountered a download error “Oops – a required file could not be downloaded.” The fix required me to add two keys to my computer’s registry to set strong cryptography using SchUseStrongCrypto. I thought I’d make a quick video about how to do this in Windows 11, as I think a lot of people are probably confused by this error message and don’t know how to add keys to your computer’s registry editor. I’m using Windows 11, but these instructions should work on Windows 10 if you haven’t yet upgraded to Windows 11.
After SQL Server 2019 Developer finished installing, I then downloaded SQL Server Management Studio (SSMS) from Microsoft’s website. I downloaded release version 18.11.1, as that was released last month and was the latest version. Once it has finished installing, just open it up and connect to the default settings and it will open up SQLQuery1.sql and you’re good to go with writing new queries from there.
If you want to add a sample database so you can start playing around with SQL Server, I’ve created a quick video explaining briefly where to download SSMS from and how to download a sample database that you can try out in SSMS so you can practice your queries and SQL code:
I'm so glad I found this video. I have been trying everything I could find on the internet to fix this. I just installed successfully by following your step by step instructions!

This was an amazing fix , I posted the issue on Microsoft community on the 14th of April and over 1000+ looked at it but there was no solution till I saw your video . Thank you for sharing it .
